Hi All

I'm leaving for Niznhy Novgorod this Friday and may well be driving about the city, so my query is this: can I drive in Russia with my UK licence, or do I need to have some special type of licence?
Thanks. Tony

Hi Tony,

You will need to get a 'International driving permit - IDP 1949', £5.50p from your local Post Office.

Yep, you'll need to get the International license which is not really a license but a recognized translation of your license in something like 9 languages (so be sure to have you actual license with you).

Also, driving around Russia is not too bad if you know where you are going, but tactics of the traffic police could become expensive if you are ever stopped (negotiation skills are beneficial, but traffic fines are often so low that you are better off just accepting the ticket if time is not an issue).

Good Luck!

The answers by Vinny and Cheesy concerning the international drivers licence are 100% correct.

In the UK the International Drivers Licence takes about five minutes to sort out.

Further to comments made by Cheesy you will have to accept that in the case of an incident you will be in trouble unless you speak fluent Russian the other option is to make sure that you are always accompanied by a Russian speaker.

Good luck with the driving.

Good stuff! [hi.gif] Personally I think you are mad to even consider driving in the FSU but I guess insanity goes with the territory. (yellowmaninstraightjacket GIF)
